Energy Sector Analysis

Client

The Malta Hotels and Restaurants Association and the Government of Malta

Challenge

Devise and implement an idea by which Hotels in Malta could benefit from increasing their Energy Efficiency.

The Approach

Following recommendations given to the Government of Malta in a recent report on the status of energy efficiency in the Malta Tourism Sector, we picked up on one of the points and presented a project proposal for a scheme to benchmark and reward the energy efficiency of hotels.

The proposal was presented to both the Government and the Malta Hotels and Restaurants Association, and there was a agreement that the project should go ahead.

We assembled a team of associates and launched the project in 2017. The scheme principles were defined and tested against EU State Aid rules. Legal advice was provided by Deloitte Legal Malta.

The scheme revolves around software which allows hotels to upload their utility consumption.  Once built, the software was tested with sample data which was analysed to establish the benchmarking criteria.

The Result

The project created a comprehensive software that allows hotels to enter consumption data and provide benchmarking of the hotel sets. The software determines the results and compares like-for-like hotels in categories, assigning points to the efficiency results. These points translate into financial awards intended to be used as funding for future energy efficiency projects.

A website was set-up for the hotel industry to access the software as well as a variety of tools which assist hotels in selecting technologies for future investment in Energy Efficiency. It also provides them with ROI calculations to assist with financial decisions. The website also includes other tools for training, policy making and supplier access.

The scheme was approved for funding by Government and this is being launched in 2018 with a possible extension to the Restaurant Sector being considered.
