Challenge

To produce 3D printed plastic injection mould inserts with good finish which could be used to mould a short run of parts in ABS plastic.

The Approach

The inserts design was first modelled in 3D. Then together with our partners in 3D printing, we carried out research to find the best solution in terms of applicable 3D printing technology and materials.

We carried out trials to test the solutions, and the resulting mould inserts were then further tested at the Malta University. The parts were successfully moulded, and were of a suitable quality to be used as demonstration prototypes.

Once these first moulds were satisfactory, we printed further inserts with an enhanced design.

The Result

The 3D technology was successfully proven.

Following on from the initial trails, Toly started a programme of ongoing trials for other samples and prototypes.

As a result, Toly now has an additional resource at hand to quickly produce small quantities of demo samples and prototypes.

Toly has since decided to invest in a 3D Printer and to carry out further tests with 3D printing of metal components.
